Waardering: 4 uit 5.

Demure is the first part in a new duology by Hope E. Davis. I hadn’t heard from this author before, but was drawn to the stunning cover. The synopsis is appealing and is unique, since it doesn’t give away much of the story. I was really curious about what this book would bring. What will Hope E. Davis have in store for her readers?

Unsure of what she wants to do with her life, 25-year-old recent college graduate Sierra Lopez decides to complete a one-year master’s program at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Alone in a new city where she knows exactly no one, Sierra downloads Tinder, expecting to go on a few casual dates during her study of human aging and fragility.

What she doesn’t expect is to meet the mysterious and brooding Aodhan De Thuaidh who doesn’t seem to quite fit in Dublin either. And when he’s 30 minutes late for their first date, Sierra writes him off as just another jerk on Tinder.

But Aodhan keeps showing up. First around campus, then around the bar Sierra is hanging out at, and then he gets a job at Sierra’s work. He claims it’s just a chance they keep running into each other, but something about Aodhan just isn’t adding up…

The story starts of at a slow rate, making it seem like it is all about being a lone student with family issues. However soon Aodhan makes his entrance and the story gets more mysterious. The hints to Twilight, the beanie and interest in old languages, make that you can easily easily Aodhan isn’t human. This story feels like a mix between A Court of Thorns and Roses and Narnia, even though it has some Twilight vibes in the beginning.

I liked the characters in this book, even though I feel like there isn’t much depth to them. Therefore this book is a real easy read and since it also is a bit predictable to most fantasy readers, you can just read this book when you are looking for an easy but enjoyable read.

Some thing in this book have been worked out well when they are introduced, but I felt like sometimes the ending of this things or scenes is worked out too quick. Did I not like the book then? No, not at all. This book is a lovely book which is easy to read. I loved the storyline and was hooked from the top. I am really looking forward to read the next part called Bold. Since I enjoyed Demure a lot but see room for improvement, I give it a 4 star rating.
